How to Tell If You Have Black Mold — And Why the Color Isn't the Point

"Black mold" is one of the most Googled phrases in home ownership. People find something dark in the basement or behind the washing machine and immediately wonder if they're dealing with the dangerous kind. The short answer: color alone won't tell you much. Here's what actually matters.

What "black mold" actually refers to

When people say "black mold," they usually mean Stachybotrys chartarum — a specific mold species known for producing mycotoxins that can cause health issues with prolonged exposure. But here's the problem: Stachybotrys is dark greenish-black, and so are dozens of other mold species that aren't particularly dangerous. You can't identify it by eye.

Conversely, mold that looks white, grey, or green can also produce irritants. Color is not a reliable indicator of anything. What matters is the species, the concentration, and how long people in the space have been exposed to it.

Signs that something is wrong — regardless of color

Rather than focusing on color, watch for these:

• Musty or earthy smell that lingers even after cleaning — often the first real sign
• Visible fuzzy or powdery growth on walls, ceilings, around window frames, under sinks, or on drywall
• Water staining — old or active — that was never properly dried and treated
• Recurring respiratory symptoms in people who spend time in the space — coughing, eye irritation, headaches that improve when you leave
• Condensation on walls or windows during winter, suggesting humidity is running high indoors

When to test vs. when to just remove it

Air quality testing and species identification are useful in specific situations — insurance claims, property sales, or when someone in the household has a compromised immune system and the species matters medically.

For most residential situations, if you can see mold growth larger than roughly 30 square centimetres (a small hand-sized patch), you don't need to spend money identifying it first. You need to remove it properly. A good remediation job follows the same process regardless of species: containment, HEPA removal, biocide treatment, and addressing the moisture source.

What to do if you find it

Don't scrub it with bleach and hope for the best. Surface cleaning without dealing with the moisture source is one of the most common reasons mold comes back within months. It also doesn't address what's growing inside the wall or behind the drywall where you can't see it.

Small, clearly surface-level patches on tile or non-porous material in a well-ventilated bathroom are one thing. Anything on drywall, wood framing, or in an attic or crawl space warrants a professional assessment.
